Batticaloa is a very beautiful place in eastern part of Sri
Lanka. We have a lot of tourist attractions in Batticaloa such as Kallady Bridge, Batticaloa fort, Batticaloa light house, Batticaloa Beach, Batticaloa
Gate, Gandhi park, Batticaloa St. Mary's Cathedral and Batticaloa Museum.
The Gandhi park and Batticaloa Gate are in the same place.
Mahatma Gandhi Park is situated in the Bazaar Street,
Batticaloa. Nowadays this park is developed and maintained very nicely by
Batticaloa municipal council. This park is situated along the Batticaloa
lagoon.
Mahatma Gandhi Park has long walkways with many features
of interest that are perfect for family picnics, gatherings and fitness
activities in the waterfront. Here you can also see some fishermen catching
fishes with their boats.
There is a golden statue of Mahatma Gandhi established in
this place. Everybody knows about Mahatma Gandhi. Mohandas Karamchand
Gandhi, was an Indian lawyer is known as Mahatma Gandhi. He is one of the
reason for the freedom of India. Still India honoring him by keeping his face
in Indian currency.
Within the Gandhi park you can see the Batticaloa Gate as
well. Batticaloa Gate was used as port to connect Puliyanthivu with the
mainland of Batticaloa. The place believed as landing site of Rev. William
Ault, who was the first Methodist missionary to Batticaloa, in 1814. His statue
can be seen closer to the Batticaloa Gate in Gandhi park.
